Le départ approche et l’effervescence commence à monter. Cette excitation d’avant le départ que je connais bien, mélange d’impatience et de questionnements.
Les derniers préparatifs
J’essaie de réfléchir au matériel à emmener. Je n’ai pas encore fait d’essai de valise – généralement je dois réduire la voilure. Pour l’équipement photo, j’hésite encore : trépied, enregistreur audio…? Pour les appareils, j’ai mon Sony 7 alpha, un vieil hybride canon – plus petit et plus facile à transporter, et mon Contax T3 argentique. Cette résidence étant axée sur la rencontre et l’échange avec les femmes que je vais photographier, je penche pour un équipement moins imposant, plus propice à créer la confiance.
Ce dimanche, on s’est retrouvés entre “voisins” d’atelier avec @franceauda et @christian_tellez_illustrations pour un petit pique-nique. J’en ai profité pour m’entraîner à une séance de portrait avec Christian. Ces moments de partage me manqueront pendant ma résidence, mais je vais rencontrer d’autres artistes.
La Corée à Paris
Hier, comme j’étais dans le 13ème arrondissement, j’ai cherché la fameuse “rue des K-pop stores” dont j’avais entendu parler dans une émission de radio. Je ne l’ai pas trouvée, mais n’étant pas loin, je suis allée au Centre Commercial Oslo.
Dépaysement complet ! J’y ai découvert le magasin Musica qui regorge de goodies et de magazines K-World. Publique plutôt jeune lors de mon passage. J’ai été impressionnée par toutes ces cartes collectors d’idols que je ne connais pas.
En rentrant, j’ai réalisé qu’il y avait aussi un concept store juste à côté de chez moi dénommé Aju. Ambiance différente avec des marchandises variées allant des magazines de K-pop aux cosmétiques en passant par les bijoux.
La Corée est partout
La pop culture coréenne est partout. Sur France Inter, une nouvelle série d’émissions est consacrée au sujeta été publiée cet été.
Mais ce qui m’intrigue le plus, c’est cette tension entre la Corée de la pop culture – colorée, lisse, fantasmée – et celle dont mes amies coréennes me parlent et que j’ai entraperçu lors de mes précédents séjours, surtout lorsque j’y étais allée pour le travail. Le défi de ce projet sera de naviguer entre ces deux réalités, de comprendre comment les femmes que je vais rencontrer articulent ces différentes facettes dans leur rapport à la Corée.
Questions avant le départ
À une semaine du départ, mille questions se bousculent : comment mes interlocutrices coréennes percevront-elles cette fascination occidentale ? Quelle version de leur pays me montreront-elles ? Et comment rendre compte de façon juste et authentique l’intérêt de mes interlocutrices occidentales pour la Corée? Mais surtout, comment capter les nuances de cette relation complexe entre réalité et projections ?

The departure date is approaching, and excitement is building up. I am familiar with this pre-departure frenzy, a mix of impatience and uncertainty.
Final preparations
I’m trying to think about which equipment to take. I haven’t tried packing my suitcase yet – I usually have to cut back. I’m still undecided about my equipment: tripod, audio recorder…? For cameras, I have my Sony 7 Alpha, an old Canon hybrid—smaller and easier to carry—and my Contax T3 film camera. Since this residency is focused on meeting and interacting with the women I’m going to photograph, I’m leaning toward less imposing equipment.
This Sunday, I met my studio’s “neighbors” @franceauda and @christian_tellez_illustrations for a little picnic. I took the opportunity to practice a portrait session with Christian. I’ll miss these moments of sharing during my residency, but I’ll meet other artists.
Korea in Paris
Yesterday, while I was in the 13th arrondissement, I looked for the famous “K-pop store street” that I had heard about on a radio show. I didn’t find it, but since I wasn’t far away, I went to the Oslo Shopping Center.
It was a complete change of scenery! I discovered the Musica store, which is full of K-World goodies and magazines. The crowd was pretty young when I was there. I was impressed by all the collector cards of idols I didn’t know.
On my way home, I realized that there was also a concept store right next to my house called Aju. It had a different atmosphere with a variety of merchandise ranging from K-pop magazines to cosmetics and jewelry.
Korea is everywhere
Korean pop culture is everywhere. On France Inter, a new series of programs on the subject was released this summer.
What intrigues me most is the tension between the Korea of the pop culture—colorful, smooth, fantasized—and the Korea that my Korean friends tell me about and that the one I caught a glimpse of during my previous visits, especially when I went there for work. The challenge of this project will be to navigate between these two realities, to understand how the women I meet articulate these different facets in their relationship with Korea.
Questions before departure
With one week to go before departure, a thousand questions are swirling around in my head: how will the Korean women I meet view this Western fascination for their country? What version of their Korea will they show me? And how can I accurately and authentically convey the Western women I talk to interest in Korea? Above all, how can I capture the nuances of this complex relationship between reality and projections?
