Le puzzle coréen explore le paradoxe entre les femmes occidentales de plus de 45 ans fascinées par la Corée et les jeunes Coréennes qui rêvent de partir.

This blog is dedicated to the women participating in this research project on the appeal of South Korea among women—mostly French-speaking—over the age of 45. Often overlooked, their enthusiasm is poorly documented in the numerous studies that examine the Hallyu (Korean wave) phenomenon.

It also aims to contrast this enthusiasm with the desire of a younger generation of Korean women to live abroad. 

How can the same country generate such contrasting feelings of attraction and rejection?

These are the questions that underpin this collaborative project.

Week 3 – Parapluie, parapluie

Bonjour à toutes,

Pas beaucoup de nouvelles cette semaine. J’ai continué mes recherches sur le parapluie et ses significations, et compilé des centaines d’images trouvées sur le net, dont celle du MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) sur Wikicommons.

J’ai lu différents articles (dont beaucoup trouvés sur les sites des fabricants) sur les origines du parapluie en Chine et sa diffusion en Europe – c’est Catherine de Médicis qui aurait importé l’usage de l’ombrelle en France. Parce qu’à l’origine en Europe, le parapluie ou plutôt l’ombrelle, était un accessoire de femmes. Originellement symbole de pouvoir, mais aussi spirituel (protection divine), il est devenu un accessoire d’élégance notamment en Angleterre (grâce à un certain Jonas Hanway).

Le parapluie a toute une symbolique !

J’ai commencé à revisionner les scènes de parapluie capturées dans différents K-dramas. Pour l’instant j’en ai 15. Je m’intéresse particulièrement aux scènes où le visage de l’homme se découvre progressivement quand il relève le parapluie, même si la scène ultime est pour moi celle de Moon Lovers (qui réjouira certaines d’entre vous😊), dans laquelle il n’y a justement aucun parapluie.

Voilà où j’en suis cette semaine.

Hello everyone,

Not much news this week. I pursued my research on the umbrella and its signification, and compiled hundreds of images found on the internet, including the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) collection on Wikicommons.

I have read various articles (many of which found on manufacturers’ websites) about the origins of the umbrella in China and its spread to Europe – it was Catherine de Medici who introduced the parasol in France. Indeed, in Europe, the umbrella, or rather the parasol, was originally a women’s accessory. Initially a symbol of power and spiritualituality (divine protection), it slowly became an accessory of elegance, particularly in England (thanks to a certain Jonas Hanway).

You see, the symbolic of the umbrella is quite wide!

I started rewatching umbrella scenes captured in various K-dramas. So far, I have 15. I’m particularly interested in scenes where the man’s face is gradually revealed when he lifts the umbrella, although my favorite scene is the one from Moon Lovers (which some of you will enjoy😊), in which there is no umbrella at all.
